Slate Roofing Adelaide
Describe the slate roof repair, re-slating or heritage roof job you need and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects the roof and quotes in writing. South Australia's Building Work Contractors Act 1995 covers repairing a building and bars carrying on business as a building work contractor except as authorised under it.
Thanks — we have your enquiry. Someone will be in touch shortly. Prefer to talk now? Call (08) 8330 4909.
- Each enquiry goes to one independent provider for Adelaide, not to a list of firms that all ring you.
- We do not work on roofs. The provider inspects, then names the price.
- Every call opens with a notice that it may be recorded.

Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- Ask who is authorised to do the work South Australia's Building Work Contractors Act 1995 defines building work to include repairing, improving and altering a building, and bars carrying on business as a building work contractor except as authorised under the Act. This site has read no page saying whether slate roof work is covered, so ask whoever quotes for their contractor number and which work it covers.
- Heritage places are a separate question The State's guide to State Heritage Places lists re-roofing among the work that typically needs development approval, and routine maintenance among the work that does not. Whether a house is a State Heritage Place is for the council to say.
- Leaks are not always the slates A US National Park Service brief on historic slate roofs says not to assume the slates are leaking: gutters, valleys and flashings are more likely. Ask the provider to check those first.
- Many repairs, then a line The same brief says that where 20% or more of the slates on a roof or slope are broken, cracked, missing or sliding out of position, it is usually less expensive to replace the roof than to execute individual repairs.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the roof What the slates are doing, what you can see from the ground, and what you want done.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Adelaide. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the roof and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Slate Roofing across Adelaide
Adelaide's slate roofs are in the State's own heritage records. The survey of Kensington and Norwood describes the property on Elizabeth Street, Norwood: "A simple and attractive Mid-Victorian bluestone cottage with hipped slate roof and concave verandah." The survey item describes one house at survey time, not any roof today.
